How to Ask Customers for Reviews Without Breaking Platform Rules

Asking for reviews is allowed and encouraged on most platforms. The trouble starts when the ask becomes an incentive, a filter, or an unconsented message. Those three mistakes are what get reviews removed and accounts flagged.

- No buying or faking. Bought reviews, employee reviews posing as customers, and review-swap schemes are the fastest way to lose a profile.
Get consent before you message
If you email or text a customer to request a review, that contact still falls under GDPR and ePrivacy rules in the EU and UK. The safe pattern:
- Collect the order or service email for fulfilment, then ask separately for permission to send follow-up messages.
- Keep the request transactional and tied to a real purchase the person actually made.
- Honor unsubscribes immediately and keep a record of when and how consent was given.
Timing beats volume
One well-timed ask outperforms three nagging ones. Send the request when the value is fresh:
- Ecommerce: a few days after delivery, once the customer has used the product.
- Services: right after the job is signed off and the result is visible.
- SaaS: after a clear win, like a successful onboarding or a renewal.
Make the ask easy, not pushy
A good request is short, names the platform, and links straight to the review form. Tell people roughly how long it takes ("about a minute") and that honest feedback is what you want. Do not script the wording of their review for them.
